Each pack of WESTGATE ANGUS beef can be traced to an individual animal.

All cattle must be registered at birth, and are allocated a unique number.
Every animal has an ear tag in each ear, showing its herd number followed by its own unique number.

All cattle are issued with a cattle movement document - a passport which travels with an animal throughout its life - which has the animal's number on it.

The quarters hanging in the cold store are labelled, using the same cattle identification number.

As Steve the butcher prepares the various cuts, he keeps the label with the meat

As each pack of meat is weighed, the scales produce a label showing a trace code; this has a letter identifying the farmer who bred the animal, and the last 4 digits of the unique number.
